Polar Tracking

Another very useful snap point generation facility is the polar tracking option. You can turn on/off the polar tracking quickly and easily using the toolbar in the bottom right of the graphics screen.

The settings of the polar tracking can be determined in the snap settings.

It is currently set so that we have ‘Angle Intervals’ of 30 degrees and a ‘Custom Angle’ of 45 degrees. Intervals can be set at a variety of preset intervals as well as a list of custom angles. So, as well as 45 degrees we can have a further value of 72.5 degrees.

With the polar tracking on we can select a start point for a new member and then move away to select the second end of the member. We can see now that we have start points at the 30 degree increment, the 45 degree increment, the 60 degree increment and the 72.5 degree increment.

We can move back to the 30 degree angle and type in a length of 8m to complete the new member.

More generically, polar coordinates can be defined at the second end of a member using a text input. Select the first end of the member and then type in [email protected] degrees to give us a member at exactly 8m long at 32.5 degrees to the X axis.

There are a variety of text inputs available to make generating members quick and easy. For example, clicking on the first end of a member, we can now say that we want the second end of the member at 3m in the X direction, 0m in the Y direction and 2m in the Z direction – typed in as @3,0,2.

Giving us a point that is set 3m in the X direction and 2m in the Z direction.
